Awning Walls: Which Material Is Suitable for Your Structure?

If you are planning on installing awning walls around your home's deck, patio, balcony or other outdoor structures, there are multiple factors that you must think about before making your purchase. The most critical of these issues is the fabric used to manufacture this shading structure. Your choice of material will determine the cost of the awning walls for your home improvement project. Also, this aspect will have an impact on the performance, durability and maintenance demands of the structure. Here are the primary types of fabrics to consider when looking for awning walls.

Traditional Canvas

Traditional canvas awnings are not as popular as they were in the past. However, if you are interested in this type of material, you will find appropriate products to match your needs. Canvas is a highly durable material which can withstand years of use and abuse. The fibres are tightly knotted, reducing the possibility of tearing. Also, the organic material has a tight structure which shields the covered space from both heat and light. Unfortunately, the canvas is vulnerable to water damage. If the cloth is exposed to water for prolonged periods, it will start to wear away. Therefore, you must ensure that the fabric is treated for water-resistance and fungal protection before purchase.

Acrylic

Acrylic fabrics are favoured over the traditional canvas in the modern market because they can withstand harsh conditions more efficiently. In simple terms, this type of material will not experience deterioration in structure due to continued exposure to moisture. In general, acrylic is resilient and can resist mechanical stress. Also, it repels water and provides exceptional protection against UV radiation. Therefore, the installed awning walls around your home will perform well for an extended period. Unfortunately, pure acrylic can be an expensive material to purchase for awnings. If you are concerned about the price, you should consider choosing acrylic-coated fabrics such as polyester and poly-cotton blends.

Vinyl

If you are looking for an inexpensive material for your awnings, you should check out the vinyl and vinyl-coated products on the market. This plastic is less sophisticated than vinyl, making it a cheaper alternative. Vinyl is a polymeric fabric; so, it will protect from moisture. The material has an inherent translucent structure, unlike the above-mentioned alternatives. Therefore, it is a good option if you want to have awning walls which can provide significant light infiltration. While vinyl fabrics are inexpensive, you should note that they are often less durable than the acrylic counterparts.
